Kerala, acknowledged as the land of Parashurama, one of the reincarnations of Lord Vishnu is prominent for its alluring and exotic natural beauty besides its born thirst to preserve the rich tradition of sciences at its purest form. Moreover, the land named as “God’s own country” became the cradle for the traditional sciences including Ayurveda. With enormous support of Believers, Nurturers, Practitioners and Researchers, the science of Harmony adapted, accepted and amended at its best possible form.

Ashtavaidyas, the name come at first in that category due to their immense dedication, preservation and contribution to the science. Besides their genealogy goes to Vagbhata, one of the great triads, they were well versed in all eight branches of Ayurveda. Stories of those medical legends mentioned in the book named “Eitheehyamala” (Garland of Tales) are even studied during medical education for their excellent clinical attitudes. Chikitsa Manjari, Yogamrutam, Abhidana Manjari, Alathoor Manipravalam, Kairali and Vakyapradeepika- commentary on Ashtanga Hridaya are few among the authorship-accredited books by them.

Thrissur Thaikat Mooss

Pazhanellippurathu Thaikat Mooss family is one of the most famous Ashtavaidya families and said to be the royal physicians of King Zamoorin of ancient Malabar. They migrated to ancient Cochin Province for extension of their services to the people of that region, and patronized by Sakthan Thampuran, the king of erstwhile Cochin. Soon they were named after the place Thrissur and came to be called as Thrissur Thaikat Mooss. This family has special blessings from Lord Vettekkaran (incarnation of Lord Siva in the form of hunter) which help them continue their wisdom and spiritual practices in course of time; they emerged as flag bearers of ayurveda in Kerala.

Among them, the name that requires prerequisite mention is definitely of Ashtavaidyan Thrissur Thaikat Narayanan Mooss. He was famous one under whom more than ten books are accredited of par excellence in literature in addition to “Sindoora Manjari”- one earlier work on pharmaceutical hyperfine powders and purifications of various toxic metals and minerals deserves special reference.

Ashtavaidyan Thrissur Thaikat Vasudevan Mooss popularly known as Unni Mooss was born in the year 1900. His father Ashtavaidyan Narayanan Mooss was not only a famous physician but also a celebrated poet who has written more than ten books. His mother was Smt. Devaky Antharjanam. Unnimooss studied ayurveda under the guidance of Vasudevan Nambisan, a famous ayurveda teacher and practitioner of his time as is father expired when he was five years old. He further went to Kodungallur Kochunni Thampuran, a specialist in Toxicology for higher studies. He married to Smt. Savithry, a member of another Ashtavaidya family – Alathiyoor Nambi.

Unnimooss died at a very young age of 27 years. He was a prodigy in the field of Ayurveda. At that time, modern medicine was gaining popularity in India and Ayurvedic way of treatment was pushed to back seat. He tried to reinstate Ayurveda as a main way of treatment. He brought resurgence in Ayurveda with a definite vision of making it to most popular health science in India. Unnimooss was most illustrious and celebrated physician of his time and well known for passionate in ayurveda, correct diagnosis and of course simplicity in treatment. He was accessible to people from all walks of life, right from kings to most common man. His contributions towards management of communicable diseases received highest appreciations from the society.

The great malayalam poet K. K. Raja paid highest tributes to his contribution by composing an elegy, named “BASHPANJALI” in his regard.

Thrissur Thaikat Unni Mooss

Ashtavaidyan P.T. Narayanan Mooss

Born in another famous Ashtavaidya family, Pulamanthol Mooss, Ashtavaidyan P.T. Narayanan Mooss married to Devaki Antharjanam, the only daughter of Unnimooss. He was a reputed academician, renowned clinician and well-known social worker. Under his guru Kuttenchery Mooss’s guidance, he made great reputations by treating celebrities like Ramana Maharshi, Gulsari Lal Nanda, Guru Golwarker, etc.

Narayanan Mooss represented Kerala as a member in the committee of Ayuvedic Pharmacopeia, constituted by Government of India and in regulatory board of Ayurvedic Post Graduate Course. He had been an examiner in various Universities. He stamped his presence in all areas including practicing, teaching channelising ayurveda education, manufacturing of ayurvedic medicines, social services etc. His scholarly wisdom was well appreciated by all intellectuals and practitioners of Ayurveda.

Following the untimely demise of Unnimooss, Ashtavaidyan P.T. Narayanan Mooss became the Chairman of SNA. SNA has been under his efficient leadership for more than six decades. He carried forward the company to new heights. SNA has become a leading manufacturing unit as well as a reputed treatment centre. During his tenure, SNA has grown up to a full-fledged institution in Ayurveda with different branches like pharmacy, nursing home, academic division, R&D and publication division. SNA had the rare opportunity to receive the services of other Ashtavaidyas like Kuttanchery Mooss, Vayaskara Mooss, Pulamanthole Mooss and Alathiyoor Nambi.

 

 

The lineage, now continues under the proficient leadership of Ashtavaidyan P.T.N. Vasudevan Mooss. He is the Managing Director of SNA Oushadhasala (P) Ltd. Dr. Mooss earned his BAMS degree from the University of Calicut and post-graduation in Panchakarma from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka. He took over the reins of SNA from Ashtavaidyan P. T. Narayanan Mooss from whom he had also learned Ayurveda traditionally.

Despite his busy schedule being a dedicated clinician, he is also an established entrepreneur. His deep interest in ayurveda and its comprehensive development has led him to undertake more research in this field. By adhering to the tradition, without compromising on quality, but assimilating the modern technological advances, he helps ayurvedic medicines gain acceptance among international medical community.
